Are you serious??

I had lunch last week with some school moms. We had a good time until I brought up Cerriah's anxieties over going to junior high. I told the ladies she worries about missing class because of having to go to the nurse. It's not fair that she misses assignments or misses class instruction because she has to go there so often.
One of the mom's asked if she could do it in class. The other mom nearly flipped!! She said she would pull her daughter out of school if Cerriah was able to do that in class. She said Cerriah would have "blood" on her and she could "infect" her daughter. Are you serious??? Hello, diabetes is not CONTAGIOUS!! I know there are many other factors that involve blood, but that truly hurt me. Her daugher has autism and has an aide with her 24 hours a day. To me, needing a glucometer is just like having an aide with you. It's necessary!! I calmly told her the blood is about the size of a pin needle and she uses alcohol. She smirked and made a disgusted face. I tried not to cry.
I felt so bad, because this is an adult that should be more understanding. What are kids going to think of her?? I would love to push for her to be able to test in class so she doesn't have to make the trip down to the nurses office. She treats herself at home and knows more about the pump and carbohydrates than most adults do. Ignorant people like this mom make me upset.

I find a lot of people are very ignorant (stupid) when it comes to things like that...Please don't let her nasty remarks get you down.

I wish there were a way that the general public could be educated about it.

That is not okay. Even if she was ignorant enough to think those things, why would she say them in front of Cerriah's mother? I hope that isn't an indicator of how people young and old will behave when she gets into junior high. And it isn't fair that she have to go to the nurses office to check her sugar all the time. grr.

Push for it!! :) Kacey did all her testing and shots down in the nurses office until she ended up getting the flu because she was being exposed to germs on a daily basis that she didn't need to be exposed to (snotty noses, coughs, colds, throwing up and worse) I spoke to the teacher and she was fine with having Kacey do her tests down in the class because it was less time she missed out and it was safer in the long run. When Kacey says "I feel low" then she can test right then and treat it rather than having to get someone to take her to the nurse to treat something that could be dealt with in the room.

That other mother had NO right to say what she did! Should her child be pulled from class because of the disability she has? I would have blasted back at her so (((hugs))) for being the better person.

But just FYI, you have the right to have your child test where she needs to. Kacey now carries a purse with all her supplies in it (lancet, extra meter, alcohol pads, syringe, insulin, battery, glucose tabs, infusion set and cartridge) She switches classes but this stuff is always with her and she knows not to play with it and the kids around her know that it is medically necessary for her to have it. Talk to your school and see what kind of feedback you get.

Good luck!

My 15 year old daughter has had type 1 for 4 years now. She tests her bloodsugar wherever she may be. I don't care if it might offend someone, it is a part of her life. If a child in class fell and cut their finger would this person flip out then?? UGH, I am sorry that you were exposed to someone like that. I swear, Kids don't care....it's their parents.

OMG I probably would have lost it... I hate when people treat me like I have the plague. And YES PUSH FOR IT!!!!!!! It is dangerous for her to be walking in the hallway by herself when she is low not to mention she misses out on classroom time. When I was in school they tried to make me go to the nurse and we said NO. I had my meter and snacks with me at ALL times. The only reason I went to the nurse was when I needed to take insulin. Do you have a 504?? If not get one it protects her rights and it carries to college. But yes have her test anywhere she wants it is her health and her body and the school has no rights saying she has to go to the nurse. In the long run it is better for if she has a BG in the 30's she doesn't need to be walking around
